Girls Junior Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Strong Season In Progress for Girls Cross Country

By: Jack Hoaby

The beloved girls of the Monticello Cross Country team have been making their mark this year. The team consists mostly of underclass-women who are stepping up to the occasion. Head coach, Gail Grieme, likes the young talent the girls have to offer, and sees that the team is getting good experience for the coming years.

The runners are improving every week, some by an impressive 40 seconds. This has helped the team place quite high in the front half of their season. With multiple 2nd place finishes, and a 1st place showing at the tough Milaca Mega Meet–consisting of 18 teams–the fierce runners show promise for the oncoming weeks of the season. Making an appearance at state will be one of the team’s highly praised goals. In order to achieve this, they will need to grab a 1st or 2nd place finish at the section meet on October 27, 2016.

Although it did get a little hot at the very beginning of the season, the weather has been nice since. In the fall months, the weather could get nasty, however, fear is nowhere to be found in these girls’ hearts. “We don’t worry at all about the weather because every team has to deal with it” said Grieme. “We actually run well in the cold because many of the team members run throughout winter.” This could provide a great advantage as postseason draws near.

Success for the Girls Cross Country team is eminent, for both the near and far future.
