Six minutes into the Monticello girls basketball regular season finale vs. Big Lake, the Hornets had all the momentum.
The Magic trailed 13-4 and nothing was falling on their end of the court while it looked like everything was coming up green for the Hornets. The team continued to stick to their gameplan of getting the ball inside and it worked to perfection. The Magic continued to chip away at the lead, ultimately winning 45-39.
“A big win for the girls as we head into sections,” Magic head coach Craig Geyen said after the game.
The player of the game for the Magic was senior Cat Terres. Scoring ten of the 16 Monticello points at the half, Terres turned in up even more in the second half, getting to the line and knocking down many of her free throw shots. She finished the game with 23 points, a season high.
The momentum of the game switched with about five minutes left to play. Freshman Olivia Hanson knocked down two straight 3-point shots and Madison Katzenberger added a third one which gave the Magic a 38-36 lead with 3:36 left to play. Monticello never trailed again, avenging a Jan. 24 loss to the Hornets.
Monticello finishes the regular season 15-10 and will host a Section 5AAA game on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The opponent is still TBD as of this posting.
