It took until the second half for the Monticello Boys Soccer team to start playing like the team that went unbeaten in the regular season.
After a scoreless first half, the Magic came out strong, owning the possession battle early in the second half. With 31:26 remaining in the game, the Magic caught their first break, earning a penalty kick. Ty Modaff burned it past the left side of the outstretched Hutchinson goalkeeper, finally breaking the tie.
From there it was all Monticello. Senior—and this week’s Homecoming King—Jared Frie scored an insurance goal with 23:07 left to play and Jackson LePage added another with just over seven minutes remaining. The defense took care of the rest, including a shutout from Reese Crawford in net.
The No. 3 seeded Magic are now 9-0-3 on the season and take on the winner of No. 6 Waconia and No. 11 Heritage Christian Academy. The Section 6A second-round contest will take place at Monticello High School at 5 p.m. on Oct. 15.
